A First Weekend in Svätý Anton and Banská Štiavnica

All itineraries

Two days to discover the region: the manor house and park right next to our home, the historic UNESCO town center, and the museums that reveal why Štiavnica is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

For whom: first-time visitors to the region Season: year-round Duration: 2 days

All times in the programme are indicative recommendations. Check opening hours, admission and connections in the official sources before visiting.

Day 1 — Svätý Anton and your first encounter with Štiavnica

Morning — a peaceful start near the house

Enjoy a stroll through the historic park by the manor house (30–60 minutes, at your leisure) — the park is right next to Soví dom. Follow this with a visit to the Manor House and Hunting Museum (approx. 1.5–2 hours, recommended). While walking through the village, stop by the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk and the Church of St. Anton the Hermit — a total of 15–20 minutes (recommended); the church interior is accessible only upon confirmation.

Getting around: everything is within walking distance — both the manor house and the park are just 5 minutes from Soví dom.

Afternoon — your first encounter with the city

Drive to Banská Štiavnica (approx. 4 km, about a 10-minute drive). Take a stroll through the historic town center: Trinity Square with the plague column, the Town Hall Square, St. Catherine's Church, and Horná ružová Street (total approx. 2–3 hours, recommended — depending on your pace and coffee breaks).

Evening

Dinner in Banská Štiavnica — restaurants and cafes are independent businesses, not part of your stay; you can find an overview in the dining in the area section. Return by car to Soví dom (10 minutes).

Day 2 — the story of a mining town

Morning — museums

The Old Castle and the New Castle (total approx. 2 hours, recommended). If you enjoy mining history, continue to Kammerhof — an exhibition dedicated to the history of mining and minting.

Getting around: by car to the town (10 minutes), walk between the museums.

Afternoon — views of the city

Climb to the Banská Štiavnica Calvary (1–2 hours, recommended) or take a quiet break in the Botanical Garden with its giant sequoias, or simply wander through the parts of the center you missed on the first day.

Evening

Return to Soví dom. A peaceful evening awaits. If you are interested in the historic cellar right inside the house, please discuss its use and any additional services with us individually.

The schedule is flexible — there is no need to rush; coffee breaks and sitting on a bench in the park are just as important as the sights.

What we recommend arranging in advance

  • •Accommodation at Soví dom — during the reconstruction phase, we are accepting non-binding inquiries for 2027
  • •Please check the opening hours of the manor house and museums on their official websites (msa.sk, muzeumbs.sk) before your trip

Backup plan for bad weather

If it rains, swap the Calvary for the museums — Kammerhof, the Old Castle, or the Mining Museum in Nature with the Bartolomej adit. Find more tips in our itinerary What to do when it rains.
