10/25/2026
Discover the mining customs that shaped the history of Banská Štiavnica. Get to know the Salamander Parade, the traditional 'šachtág', and an authentic open-air museum.
Banská Štiavnica is not just a city of tajchy (artificial water reservoirs) and magnificent monuments, but above all, a place with a vibrant intangible heritage. To truly understand the soul of this mining region, you must get to know its mining customs. Banská Štiavnica lives with them to this day. Among the most famous and significant are the ceremonial 'šachtág' and the traditional leap over the leather, which recall the glorious era of the local Mining Academy and have shaped the local culture for centuries.
These unique rituals were an essential part of accepting new miners and students into the mining profession. In the following lines, we will explain what exactly these terms mean, what strict superstitions accompanied miners in the dark underground, and where you can experience these fascinating traditions firsthand during your trip or stay, for example, if you are looking for accommodation near the manor house in Svätý Anton.
Zdar Boh! and the strict rules of the underground
The life of a miner was full of uncertainty and danger, which naturally led to the emergence of many superstitions and rituals. Miners believed in the existence of supernatural beings, especially mine gnomes (permoníci), whom they did not want to anger under any circumstances. Therefore, strict unwritten rules applied underground: it was forbidden to shout or whistle, and it was strictly forbidden to kill any living creature, even a mouse or a spider.
Deep humility was the foundation of every working day. No miner would descend into the mine shaft without a sincere prayer. From this respect for the unpredictable nature and the underground, the traditional greeting "Zdar Boh!" (Godspeed) originated, which miners used not only when entering the mine but which is still used in the region today.
Šachtág and the Leap over the Leather: Rituals of the Mining Academy
The founding of the Mining Academy in the 18th century brought not only technical progress to the city but also a rich student life and specific academic traditions. The most important ceremony for accepting newcomers into the famous mining profession was the so-called leap over the leather. The leather (or mining apron) was a practical part of a miner's clothing, protecting them while descending into shafts and working in wet environments. Jumping over this symbol meant official acceptance into the guild.
This act was always associated with a ceremonial 'šachtág'. It was a social gathering governed by a strict yet humorous "beer law". The purpose of the 'šachtág' was to maintain order, strengthen relationships, and build a cheerful mood among students and professors. These traditions have been preserved in the city and are still part of celebratory events today.
