If you are looking for accommodation, Banská Štiavnica and its surroundings offer a great base for autumn or winter trips. While the surface of the historic center invites you for walks, the cooler weather is the perfect opportunity to explore the unique technical monuments hidden directly beneath the city's pavement.

The Glanzenberg hereditary adit is one of the most remarkable mining spaces in Central Europe. It is not just an ordinary mining tunnel, but an important witness to a rich history, the golden era of the Habsburg Monarchy, and significant technological discoveries. Here, you will experience firsthand the mining darkness, the chill, and the respect for the hard work of our ancestors.

A Refuge from the Cold Underground

While mining sites entice visitors with a pleasant cooling effect during the summer months, they offer a very stable refuge during gloomy autumn and cold winter days. The temperature in the Glanzenberg adit stays at a constant level of around 8°C all year round. While a harsh wind blows outside and cold rain occasionally falls, there is absolute stillness and calm deep below the city's surface, interrupted only by the quiet dripping of mine water.

Touring this space makes for an ideal morning program. After 90 minutes spent underground, a warm tea or specialty coffee on the nearby Town Hall Square (Radničné námestie) will hit the spot. After emerging from the darkness, discover the surroundings of the Štiavnica historic core, which is full of hidden corners, cafes, and artisanal shops. It is a great full-day program for anyone who has chosen, for instance, accommodation in Svätý Anton or the nearby vicinity for their stay.

Royal History

The name Glanzenberg translates to "Shining Mountain," which perfectly reflects the reputation of the silver city. This hereditary adit, documented as early as 1560, originally drained the important Špitaler vein. However, its uniqueness lies primarily in its representative function. Thanks to its stable technical condition and good accessibility from the center, where many tourists look for private accommodation in Banská Štiavnica, it quickly became a showcase of mining for prominent visitors.

In 1751, Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor and husband of Empress Maria Theresa, solemnly descended here. He was immensely fascinated by the mining innovations, and in his honor, mining officials installed the first commemorative plaque underground. Later, these spaces were also visited by Emperor Franz Joseph I. During your walk, you will reach the Kaufhaus shaft, where you can see the famous imperial stairs carved directly into the rock.

An Authentic Journey Through Darkness

Unlike other commercial caves and accessible mines, Glanzenberg preserves raw authenticity without unnecessary artificial lighting or modern interventions. Before entering, every visitor receives a traditional coat, a helmet, and a headlamp. You enter the underground just as miners did centuries ago.

  • The entire route measures approximately 500 meters there and 500 meters back.

  • The tunnels are very narrow and low in many places, so a protective helmet is essential.

  • There is a steel grate under your feet, with mine water flowing underneath. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended.

  • A comprehensive tour with a detailed expert commentary by a guide takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Preparing for Your Visit and Logistics

Finding the right entrance to the adit can be slightly confusing for a first-time visitor. The physical entrance and the adit mouth can be found on Kammerhofská Street, right next to the prominent memorial to the fallen in World War II. However, the tour does not start there. You will pick up tickets and full equipment at the box office and cloakroom, which is located in the historic Kammerhof building, about 80 meters further down the street.

It is recommended to arrive at the box office at least 15 minutes before your scheduled entry so you have enough time to buy tickets, store personal items, and adjust your safety helmets. After completing the tour and returning to your accommodation by the mansion in Svätý Anton, you can calmly process your impressions of this unique mining structure.

Entry Rules and Practical Details

In October and during the following winter months, the museum operates on a limited off-season schedule, which you should keep in mind when planning your trip. Public entries are standardly organized on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:00, and on weekends on Saturdays at 10:00, 12:00, and 14:00. The exhibition is usually closed on Sundays and Mondays. The maximum capacity of one tour group is strictly limited to 15 people due to the cramped spaces and safety regulations. For this reason, it is almost essential to make an early online or telephone reservation directly through the Slovak Mining Museum. If you are considering a trip, don't forget to secure your accommodation in time, as Banská Štiavnica is a popular destination even outside the main season.

The admission fee for an adult is 9.00 € in the current season. Students, seniors, and children are eligible for a discounted entry. It is important to note that you can pay by card at the box office, which simplifies the whole process, but it is always good to have some small cash on hand just in case, for example, to buy small souvenirs or mining publications available at the information center.

Who Is the Tour Suitable For

A visit to the mining underground is a specific experience and is not meant for absolutely everyone. For strict safety and operational reasons, entry is only permitted to children from 6 years of age. For younger visitors, a stay in the cold, damp, and dark without natural light could be too demanding, and furthermore, safety helmets might not fit them properly.

For older children aged 7 to 15, it is, conversely, an extremely fascinating and educational adventure. Guides often adapt their narrative to engage children with stories about mining goblins and the real life of young apprentices in the mines. On the other hand, adults with diagnosed claustrophobia, a strong fear of the dark, or more serious musculoskeletal problems should carefully consider their participation. The difficulty of the terrain lies in the fact that the tunnels are indeed very low in places and require walking in a slight crouch. The floor consists of a damp and occasionally slippery steel grate. If you have knee or back problems, a 90-minute walk in such an environment can be exhausting.

Clothing and Parking in the City

As mentioned, the temperature underground reaches a stable 8°C, and the air humidity approaches 100%. The traditional mining coat you will receive is primarily used to protect your clothing from dripping mine water and fine dust; it does not provide warmth. Therefore, proper layering of clothing is key.

  • Choose a warm middle layer, ideally a quality fleece jacket or a thick wool sweater. Avoid thin cotton hoodies, which quickly absorb moisture.

  • Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are an absolute necessity. Heels, sandals, or light canvas sneakers are completely unsuitable for this terrain, and the guide may not even allow you on the tour for safety reasons.

  • Regarding transport, the nearest paid parking is available directly on Kammerhofská Street, but its capacity is very limited, and spaces fill up quickly.

  • An excellent alternative is the larger paid "park and ride" parking lot located under the New Castle (Nový zámok). From there, it is only a pleasant 10-minute walk downhill to the adit's box office with views of the center.

Autumn Itinerary for a Trip to Banská Štiavnica and Surroundings

To make the most of your day in Banská Štiavnica, we have prepared an ideal autumn itinerary for you. Start in the morning at 10:00 with a tour of the Glanzenberg adit underground. After it ends, when you return to daylight and return your equipment, move to the Trinity Square (Trojičné námestie) for a hearty lunch in one of the local restaurants. We recommend tasting traditional Slovak specialties, which are guaranteed to warm you up after the cold of the mining tunnels.

In the afternoon, when the sun is highest and beautifully illuminates the autumn nature, take a slow walk up to the majestic New Castle. From its exhibitions, and especially from the top floor, you will get the most beautiful panoramic view of the entire city and the surrounding hills, which play with all shades of yellow, orange, and red. For visitors planning a longer weekend stay (accommodation in Svätý Anton – near the Klinger tajch is very sought after), we recommend an easy walk around its surface, which resembles a mirror lined with colorful trees in October. Also, do not miss Svätý Anton. Accommodation by the mansion with an extensive English park is also a popular choice if you prefer more peace and quiet. After a hard day full of walking and exploring medieval history, treat yourself to a well-deserved rest in comfort, where you can recharge your batteries for further Štiavnica adventures.
