Looking for the perfect spot for a family getaway? Discover leisure opportunities and accommodation tips in Svätý Anton and the surrounding Banská Štiavnica area.
October in the Štiavnica Mountains has a unique charm. Morning mists over the mountain lakes (tajchy) and long evenings create an atmosphere that calls for unconventional experiences. If you are planning a visit to our region at the end of October, don't miss an event guaranteed to give you chills. The neighboring Baroque-Classical manor house, famous for its hunting exhibitions and lavish salons of the Koháry and Coburg families, transforms for one special night. The exclusive Night of Horror will guide you through dark corridors, revealing secrets that remain untold during regular tours.
The Dark Side of the Coburg Residence
The manor house in Svätý Anton was completed in 1750, and its architecture hides strict calendar symbolism. Originally, it featured 4 entrances, 7 arcades, 12 chimneys, 52 rooms, and 365 windows. After dusk, this mass of stone and history turns into a stage where legends come to life. This is not about cheap scares, but a carefully crafted night tour that utilizes the authentic setting of the historical residence and masterfully built theatrical atmosphere. Rumor has it that the restless souls of former servants, who suffered under the harsh punishments of their masters, still wander the corridors today. The dark corners of the arcade courtyard and the cooling stone cellars take on a nearly Gothic touch under the glow of candles and dimmed lights. This unique combination of a genuine historical setting with professional acting and a tense atmosphere makes the event one of the highlights of the autumn season.
Practical Event Details
The event takes place on Saturday, October 31st, with the first entries starting at 7:00 PM. Admission is 6 € per person. Since the capacity for night tours is strictly limited for safety reasons, I recommend securing tickets in advance—ideally at least two weeks ahead—via the online booking system. Organizers from the Museum in Svätý Anton warn that the event is not suitable for children under 12, as the atmosphere is truly dense and intense. The tour lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes, with visitor groups entering in 15-minute intervals. It is important to arrive at least 10 minutes before your reserved time to avoid delays—the organizer notes that missing a purchased slot does not guarantee the possibility of joining the next group.
The Benefit of Walkability
Night events bring logistical challenges, such as narrow roads and reduced visibility. Our village is just a few minutes' walk from the manor gates through the historic park, which every weekend guest will appreciate. If you are arriving by car, please count on the fact that parking spaces fill up quickly during major events, and plan your return trip in advance. If you are interested in a stay in 2027, send us a non-binding inquiry with your preferred dates.
Autumn Romance and Marína
Autumn in Banská Štiavnica favors couples looking for peace. The city of love, known for the world's longest love poem by Andrej Sládkovič from 1846, swaps its summer hustle for the cozy atmosphere of cafés hidden in the historical houses on Trotúr street. During October, I recommend visiting the Epicenter of Love, where you will find an interactive exhibition in the house of Marína Pischlová, free from the tourist crowds typical of the summer months. You will have plenty of space to stop at individual verses and enjoy the innovative presentation of this immortal story.
A pleasant alternative for a romantic afternoon is a walk to the Klinger lake. Although the water is no longer inviting for a swim and its temperature barely exceeds 10 °C, the reflections of autumn-colored beeches and oaks on the dark surface offer an exceptionally photogenic sight. The walk to the lake from the center of Banská Štiavnica takes about half an hour at a leisurely pace and is an undemanding route that leads you to silence, disturbed only by the rustling of fallen leaves.
Active Relaxation in the Štiavnica Mountains
Hikers seeking physical activity should not miss Mount Sitno (1,009 m a.s.l.), the cradle of European mountain tourism. The peak holds not only natural but also historical significance; the original lookout tower was built there by Count Jozef Koháry as early as 1727. It was later renovated after a fire and now serves as a small exhibition. In October, the best starting point for the ascent is Počúvadlo Lake.
The climb following the blue trail from the lake takes about an hour and a half and leads through steeper sections and wooden stairs set between majestic andesite rocks. This route is about 3 kilometers long with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters. Although the lookout tower and buffet below the peak may be open mostly during favorable weekends outside the main summer season, the views from the rocky cliffs over the autumn valleys colored in orange and red are definitely worth the effort. Don't forget sturdy hiking boots and layers—especially functional and windproof ones—as it tends to be extremely windy and cold at the top, regardless of the sunny weather down in the valley.
For cyclists, the region offers the famous "Bajkom k tajchom" trails, but in October, you should account for shorter days and cooler airflow in the valleys. I recommend shorter routes, such as the undemanding circuit around Beliansky tajch, which you can complete in an hour and a half.
Alternatives for Families with Children
If you are traveling with your family and looking for a suitable program, tailor it to the region's possibilities and the changing autumn weather. A very popular and child-friendly choice is the Open-Air Mining Museum, where you will be equipped with an authentic miner's coat (a "fáračka"), a safety helmet, and a headlamp right at the entrance to the Bartolomej adit, which has been tunneling under the surface since the 17th century. Children are usually thrilled by this "dress-up." A tour with an experienced guide, who shares historical facts interwoven with mining legends, lasts about 90 minutes. The temperature underground remains stable at around 8 °C all year round, so even on a warm October day on the surface, it is necessary to bring warm sweaters, trousers, and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Admission for an adult is around 10 €, and there are discounted family tickets available that save some costs.
If you don't feel like traveling for experiences outside the village, the permanent hunting exhibition right on the premises of the mentioned manor house in Svätý Anton is captivating. There are detailed animal dioramas, valuable trophies, and historical weapons that attract the attention of not only adults but also curious children. The surrounding, exceptionally vast English-style park, with artificial caves and streams, is an ideal place for long, peaceful walks, hide-and-seek behind old oaks, or classic gathering of autumn treasures like acorns and chestnuts, which can be used for evening creative crafts.

A quality trip in October should be intertwined with good food that warms you up nicely after a day spent outdoors. In recent years, Banská Štiavnica has profiled itself as a gastronomic center with interesting concepts, but outside the summer season, it is good to adapt to the changed conditions. You will find traditional dumplings (halušky) or pierogi in verified restaurants right on Trotúr, but I also recommend trying local cafés offering great homemade cakes and artisanal coffee to energize you during a dreary afternoon. However, keep in mind that many establishments switch to limited hours after September. Some restaurants may be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so check the current opening hours on social media or by phone before visiting, so you don't find a closed door after returning from Sitno or the mine.
Suggested Extended Weekend Itinerary
For those who want to make the most of the October days, I offer a simple suggestion on how to combine the best of the Štiavnica Mountains and Svätý Anton into a three-day stay.
-
Friday: After arriving and settling in, visit Banská Štiavnica. Spend the afternoon with a slow walk through the historic center, stop by the Epicenter of Love, and enjoy the end of the day at the Klinger lake. Spend the evening in one of the cozy Štiavnica restaurants.
-
Saturday: Reserve the morning for physical activity. Head to Počúvadlo and conquer Sitno. If you have younger children, swap Sitno for a descent into the Bartolomej adit in the mining open-air museum. You can spend the rest of the day relaxing in Svätý Anton or having lunch in one of the local huts (koliba). At 7:00 PM, the main point of the program awaits you—the Night of Horror at the manor house.
-
Sunday: Before heading home, don't miss a peaceful walk through the extensive English park of the manor and perhaps peek into the daily exhibitions to compare how the spaces that frightened you yesterday look in normal daylight.
Practical Tips in Conclusion
Autumn mountains can be tricky, especially due to freezing mornings and lingering thick fog that often stays in the valleys until late morning. When driving, especially on the narrow and winding route between Štiavnica and Svätý Anton, exercise extra caution. Reduced visibility and the frequent presence of deer in close proximity to the roads, especially in the early morning and at dusk, require full concentration and slower driving.
Always pack a headlamp in your backpack for hiking—days shorten rapidly in October, and after the time change, it gets dark shortly after four in the afternoon. A thermos with hot tea and a raincoat should be standard equipment for every mountain visitor at this time of year.
