Autumn Weekend: Tips for a Perfect Romantic Getaway
10/11/2026· Updated 10/21/2026
Discover where to head for autumn trips around Banská Štiavnica. Find tips for hiking, sightseeing, and romantic accommodation for a perfect weekend.
October in the Štiavnica Mountains is magical. Mist rolls through the valleys, and the mixed forests are painted in shades of gold and copper. Nature shows its most enchanting face—warm colors of deciduous trees contrast with green spruces and blue skies, especially if we are graced with a beautiful Indian summer. If you are planning an escape from the city and looking for romantic accommodation, Svätý Anton is the ideal choice. It offers not only exceptional peace away from the busy center of Banská Štiavnica but also an excellent strategic location for all your trips in the area. From our villa, you step directly into a perfect autumn weekend full of history, fascinating views, and deep tranquility.
The region of Banská Štiavnica and its surroundings is particularly attractive in October because the summer tourist season has passed. Both the city streets and hiking trails have cleared, allowing you to perceive the genius loci of this land much more intensely. The air is crisp, perfect for long walks, and the evenings are long enough to enjoy them in a cozy atmosphere with a glass of good wine.
An Evening with Wine and History
After arriving at the Soví dom villa and settling into your accommodation, much-needed relaxation awaits. Traveling here from various corners of Slovakia can be tiring after a long week, so it is important to have space to catch your breath. Autumn evenings in the countryside begin quite early; the sun sets between five and six o'clock, which is the perfect time to visit and explore our fascinating underground.
Our historic cellar has an amazing, intimate atmosphere right beneath old arches that breathe with centuries of history. It is a space for gathering and small meetings. The use of the cellar and any supplementary services, such as a wine tasting, can be arranged individually when preparing your stay.
Practical tips for a perfect evening:
-
Arrival is possible from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM; please agree on the exact time with the host in advance.
-
If you would like to use the cellar, please mention it in your inquiry—we will confirm availability and options individually.
-
Underground spaces are cooler than the house, so warmer clothing is always useful.
Morning at the Seat of the Koháry Family
After a peaceful morning, head straight for the noble history that shaped this village. A five-minute walk from Soví dom, in close proximity to the English garden and forest park, stands the magnificent Svätý Anton Manor House.
This late-Baroque gem with Classicist elements was built in 1744 by the influential Koháry family on the site of a much older 16th-century fortress, which had been previously rebuilt into a stronghold by the famous Italian engineer Giulio Ferrari to serve as defense against Turkish raids. To this day, the original bastion remains from this fortress, adding to the majestic appearance of the grounds. Later, the manor passed through marriage into the possession of the Coburg dynasty, whose members included, for example, the Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand.
The interiors of the manor hide immense wealth—surprisingly well-preserved, authentic, and rich furnishings from various historical periods. You will find here not only original furniture but also precious art collections, paintings, and, for example, the legendary golden throne of Maria Theresa. The architecture of the building is full of calendar symbolism: it originally had 4 entrances (seasons), 7 arcades (days of the week), 12 chimneys (months), 52 rooms (weeks), and 365 windows (days of the year). Today, after renovations, this symbolism does not fit perfectly, but it remains fascinating.
Visitor information:
-
In autumn, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays. Please check current opening hours on the museum's website before your visit.
-
Admission prices and discounts for students and seniors can be found in the current price list on the museum's website.
-
The guided interior tour takes about one to two hours, followed by a long walk in the adjacent English park. This vast historical park is full of rare trees from all over the world, ponds, old statues, and artificial caves, and in October, it bursts with the most beautiful colors.
Autumn Sitno and the Charm of Nature
When you want to explore our region more closely and fully discover the surroundings, do not miss the beauty of autumn nature. October, thanks to stable weather without summer storms and pleasant, not-too-high temperatures, is clearly the best time for hiking in the Štiavnica Mountains.
The dominant peak and highest mountain of the entire range is the majestic Sitno (1,009 m a.s.l.). From the small and quiet village of Ilija, a short drive from Svätý Anton, a great hiking trail marked with green signs leads to the top. Sitno is not just an ordinary hill; it is a place shrouded in mystery. A well-known legend says that deep inside the mountain, the powerful Sitno knights are sleeping, waiting to wake up and help the Slovaks in their time of greatest need. However, what awaits you at the peak are not knights, but stunning panoramic views that, in clear autumn weather, reach as far as the Low Tatras or even Hungary.
Details of the hike from the village of Ilija:
-
The route follows the green markings through Ilija to the Vlčia jama intersection and from there to the summit.
-
It is less frequented and bypasses the steep section of metal stairs near the peak.
-
Check the exact parameters of the route (length, elevation, and time) before your ascent in the Sitno trip card or an up-to-date tourist map.
-
Directly at the summit stands a historic wooden lookout tower from the 18th century, built using stones from the ruins of the old Sitno castle.
-
Definitely pack a thermos with hot tea and a windbreaker.
-
From the summit, you can walk to the ruins of Sitno Castle itself, which withstood Tatar raids and Turkish attacks over the centuries.
An Afternoon by the 'Tajchy' and Technical Monuments
After descending from Sitno, your legs deserve a rest. You will find the best one by the world-unique feature of this region—the famous Banská Štiavnica 'tajchy', artificial water reservoirs that are an inseparable part of the landscape. This ingenious water management system, built mainly in the 18th century by engineering greats like Matej Kornel Hell and Samuel Mikovíni, had a primary purpose. Water collected from rainfall (since there are no large rivers in the area) powered pumping and hoisting machines in the mines, which literally saved the mining business from bankruptcy. Today, the reservoirs form a perfect and romantic backdrop for trips and walks.
From Ilija, it is less than a 10-minute drive to probably the most famous lake of the entire system—the Počúvadlo reservoir. Although ordinary mortals do not swim in October (the exception being winter swimmers), the scenery offered by its vast shores lined with colorful century-old trees reflecting on the water surface is truly breathtaking.

Svätý Anton Manor and Banská Štiavnica are within easy reach of Soví dom. Choose an apartment or the whole house for yourself.
View accommodationFor a quieter, more intimate atmosphere, I recommend visiting the Klinger reservoir, located high above Banská Štiavnica. It was built in 1838, and a point of interest is that in the past, it served as a swimming pool for residents with strict rules for men and women. Its water, especially in the low autumn sun, takes on a beautiful rich emerald hue. Additionally, one can take a beautiful, easy walk from the city center to Klinger via an old mining trail.
Practical tips for the reservoirs:
-
Parking at the Počúvadlo reservoir is usually subject to a fee even outside the main season; please check the current price and payment method upon arrival.
-
The walk around the entire Počúvadlo reservoir is very easy, takes about 45 minutes, is mostly flat, and can be handled by strollers or less mobile visitors.
-
If you are looking for other enriching nature-related activities in the region, the Veľká Vodárenská reservoir is very interesting. It is characterized by a unique, almost Caribbean turquoise color of water (caused by clay microparticles from the surroundings) and is located only about a 25-minute pleasant walk with a slight incline from the center of Štiavnica (e.g., from Holy Trinity Square).
Evening Relaxation and Local Gastronomy
After an intense day full of experiences, views, and time spent in the fresh autumn air, make sure to treat yourself to a proper and well-deserved rest. If you have chosen our accommodation facility for your romantic and exploratory autumn stay, the evening with the approaching twilight is the ideal time to enjoy the local comfort and coziness that the villa itself offers. Whether you have opted for the spacious Apartment 1, or are traveling in a larger group or with family and have chosen the space called 'The Entire Soví dom' for maximum privacy, an autumn evening practically calls for finishing it with high-quality and warming food.
Banská Štiavnica is only four kilometers away from Svätý Anton; the short car ride is easy, and cyclists can manage it too. Do not count on parking in the very narrow historic city center; the streets are narrow and crowded. It is much more practical to use the park-and-ride lots on the edge of the pedestrian zone; specific parking tips can be found in the Practical Information section.
In the city itself, you will find a huge number of modern establishments. You can visit various 'hip' cafes with quality specialty coffee, homemade cakes, and amazing views, but especially excellent restaurants that are significantly focused on honest and local ingredients. Especially in October, the menus are adapted to the season, and many establishments offer exceptional and hearty seasonal specialties. Definitely try the thick pumpkin creams with toasted seeds, traditionally prepared venison from the surrounding forests with cranberries, or delicious chestnut desserts and warm apple cider to warm you up. The culinary level of Banská Štiavnica has risen sharply in recent years and will satisfy even very demanding foodies.
Sunday Morning and the Baroque Calvary
Sunday morning is made to be enjoyed without any rush or stress; feel free to sleep in and have your coffee while watching the falling leaves. After a peaceful morning and handing over the keys to your accommodation, do not rush home immediately, but head straight back to Banská Štiavnica. The city, which has been rightfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1993 thanks to its technical and historical significance, hides one more extraordinary treasure—considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and significant Baroque sacred complexes in all of Central Europe—the famous Banská Štiavnica Calvary.
This amazing, symmetrically and visually perfectly integrated architectural gem was commissioned between 1744 and 1751, thanks to the initiative and immense energy of the local Jesuit, Father František Perger. Thanks to donations from miners, wealthy burghers, and the aristocracy (whose coats of arms can still be seen on the chapels today), an astonishing work was built. The complex consists of 22 separate chapels and 3 churches (Lower, Middle, and Upper Church) and majestically towers on a prominent volcanic hill, Scharfenberg.
Just recently, the Calvary was in danger of total extinction after years of decay and vandalism; it was even included in the list of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world in 2007. Fortunately, through the immense efforts of volunteers from the Calvary Fund, it was saved and comprehensively restored to its current, glowing form.
The climb to the very top is not physically demanding at all, and you overcome the ascent by walking past individual chapels of the Stations of the Cross. Your reward at the top near the Upper Church will be the most beautiful, 360-degree, and impressive view of the entire historical part of the city nestled in the caldera of a former volcano, as well as all the surrounding hills of the Štiavnica Mountains, which, during this period, are literally playing with every imaginable autumn color.
Practical information about the Calvary:
-
Convenient parking for cars and buses is possible in the built-up free park-and-ride lot located just below the hill itself on the street with the fitting name 'Pod Kalváriou'. During the season, a local taxi or tourist train also runs from the center.
-
The ascent along the winding paths to the very top takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes at a comfortable and leisurely pace (with breaks for taking photos and admiring the chapels).
-
Admission to the entire outdoor area on the hill is completely free. However, right at the beginning, in the Lower Church (where you can also see beautifully restored frescoes), there is a nice and modern info-center. You will find an engaging exhibition about the history of the reconstruction and a souvenir shop, where your purchases can actively financially support further maintenance and continuous renewal of this significant monument.

Tailor-made Autumn Itineraries
We understand very well that every guest is different and prefers a completely different, specific type of relaxation and leisure activity. For this very reason, we have decided to prepare three carefully considered and tested recommended plans for a complete weekend, from which you will certainly choose yours.
For loving couples and peace seekers: Focus your stay exclusively on a slow pace without unnecessary stress. On Friday evening, relax in the historic underground cellar (arrange its use and potential additional services in advance) and tune into 'relaxation mode'. On Saturday morning, head out and walk hand-in-hand through the extensive, romantic, leaf-filled English park at the Svätý Anton Manor, where you can hide in artificial caves. In the afternoon, head to Banská Štiavnica, treat yourself to a good coffee in the center and buy souvenirs on the 'Trotuár', and later in the evening, finish your stay with a top-class romantic candlelight dinner in one of the renowned Štiavnica restaurants. On Sunday, if you are awake, get up early and take a joint trip to the amazing sunrise observed from the top of the Calvary; you will be there completely alone. If you are interested in how our house got here and what its story is, you can read about the rich and complicated history of the villa and its journey to renewal on a separate page, 'The Story of the House'.
For active hikers and athletes: Make the most of your stay. On Saturday, leave very early in the morning for Sitno via a longer circuit from Počúvadlo through the Krížna saddle (the whole circuit is approximately 8 km, elevation 404 m, pure walking time approx. 2:35 h; source: hiking diary N). Spend the afternoon dedicated to sports—rent electric or classic mountain bikes in the area and try out for yourself some of the many perfect routes created by the civic association as part of a project called 'Bajkom k tajchom' (linking over 300 km of cycling trails around the reservoirs). On Sunday morning, explore the rugged and hard mining heritage firsthand. We definitely recommend putting on a coat, taking a helmet, and mining deep into the dark 'Bartolomej' adit in the extensive mining open-air museum called the Mining Museum in Nature; it is a much more authentic and physical experience than just walking around the city.
For families with children and playful visitors: When staying with little ones, clearly choose much gentler and more passable routes so the trip does not end in tears. The aforementioned climb to Sitno from Lake Počúvadlo along the forest path and later gentle stairs (the so-called Tatárska lúka) can be handled, if they have enough motivation, even by smaller children (the whole circuit there and back will take approx. 1:45 h of pure walking time). In the afternoon, at the monumental Svätý Anton Manor, they will definitely be fascinated and extremely interested in the extensive hunting exhibition, where they can see very nice dioramas and a huge collection of taxidermy animals, which is always a big hit for children. While planning your trip on the web, of course, also follow all currently organized local 'Events'. Especially in autumn and specifically in October, popular autumn markets, kite-flying festivals, or various children's interactive and very creative workshops (e.g., in the 'Kammerhof' workshop) take place here very often and in large numbers.
Summary in Conclusion
Beautiful, colorful, and soothing October in the immediate surroundings of Svätý Anton and historic Banská Štiavnica reliably and irreversibly slows down the rapidly passing time. It provides the best, safest, and ideal space for mental hygiene, clearing your head, and recharging much-needed life energy before the frosts and the approaching dark winter finally strike. Whether you eventually decide during your weekend to opt for active hiking in the hills, endless and captivating admiration of the ornate Baroque architecture and narrow mining streets, or just completely simple, clean, quiet, and undisturbed reading of a good book with a cup of coffee in the comfort of our villa, we firmly and sincerely believe that you will absolutely and forever fall in love with this magical and distinctive region and will want to return. For even more visual inspiration before your first trip here, do not hesitate to take a look at the special section on our website, which is our extensive and updated Gallery, where you will find many breathtaking and real photos of autumn nature, reservoirs, and our apartments, which will surely tempt you into packing your bags immediately.
