Open-Air Mining Museum
The Open-Air Mining Museum in Banská Štiavnica offers a fascinating glimpse into mining history through its outdoor exhibits and the accessible Bartolomej adit. Visitors can explore the evolution of ore mining in Slovakia, from its medieval beginnings to the modern technologies of the 20th century.
The site is designed as an open-air museum focused on showcasing mining structures and technical equipment in their original setting. The underground tour is complemented by an extensive collection of surface machinery that documents the technical ingenuity of past centuries.
Exhibits and Technical Rarities
Among the most precious exhibits is the Kachelman water-column hoisting machine. The underground route of the Bartolomej adit brings the authentic working environment of miners to life, and the entire exhibition is enhanced by a rare horse-driven mining hoist. This wooden gin is the only preserved device of its kind in Slovakia.
